- Boron and Fluoride Detox
Boron is a naturally occurring vital trace mineral that is required for normal growth and health of the human body, especially the joints, bones and teeth. It is believed that it improves the natural ability of the human body to absorb important minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Boron More importantly, boron has been implicated with the body’s ability to detox fluoride. And for those of us who understand the implications of fluoride, this information is vital. (If you are not aware of how fluoride is affecting your health, educate yourself through our many blogs on fluoride or just google it.) Diets with a fair amount of fruits and vegetables provide about 2 to 5 mg of boron per day, but the average intake in developed countries is 1-2 mg of boron per day. Chemical fertilizers inhibit the uptake of boron from the soil: an organic apple grown in good soil may have 20 mg boron, but if grown with fertilizer it may have only 1 mg of Boron. Fertilizers combined with poor food choices have greatly reduced our boron intake compared to a generation ago. Boron deficiency may result in: • Abnormal metabolism of calcium and magnesium. • Hyperthyroidism • Sex hormone imbalance, specifically estrogen and testosterone • Osteoporosis • Arthritis • Neural malfunction (poor brain health) • Pineal gland calcification This last symptom on the above list - pineal gland calcification, is usually caused by excessive amounts of fluoride being deposited there. Boron is a transporter in moving superfluous fluoride out of the body. The pineal gland (located in the center of the brain) is responsible for melatonin synthesis, which plays a role in maintaining normal rhythms and sleep cycles. If our sleep cycle is out of whack, then our health will suffer. Melatonin also helps convert signals between our nervous and endocrine systems. Melatonin is believed to act as a neuro-protector that could play a role in the aging process and Alzheimer’s disease. Unfortunately, the pineal gland can absorb a lot of fluoride -even more than our bones. Once calcification of the pineal gland takes place, significant health problems usually occur. So that being said, it would be wise to incorporate a little extra boron in our daily diets. The best natural sources are fruits like apples, oranges, red grapes, pears, plums, kiwis, dates, as well as certain vegetables, avocado, soybeans and nuts. Chickpeas, hazel nuts, currants, peanut butter, red kidney beans, tomato, lentils, olive and onion are also notable sources of boron. There are so many sources that one would think there is no reason to ever suffer from a deficiency. But as we noted previously, chemical fertilizers inhibit the uptake of boron from the soil, so that boron intake may be greatly reduced. And with all the overdosing of fluoride in our food supply, more boron may definitely be needed. So how much boron is enough? The lowest active dose of boron supplementation appears to be 3mg, which is effective in supporting hormonal factors in postmenopausal women. Studies on osteoarthritis have used 6mg of Boron while studies in youth investigating hormonal changes have used 10mg. The optimal dose is currently not known, but the above doses appear to be effective for their aforementioned goals. And here are the health benefits: • Prevents arthritis • Reduces severity of rheumatoid arthritis • Balances sex hormones • Improves bone health • Enhances embryonic development • Can reduce post-menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats • Improves cell membrane function • Prevents congestive heart failure • Lowers cholesterol • Decreases fungal infections • Improves brain function, cognitive performance, short term memory, sleep patterns Personally, I take a boron supplement a few times a week. One needs to go slow when starting boron supplementation, as Herxheimer (die off) reactions can occur, especially when dealing with detoxing fluoride from the nervous system. In addition to detoxing the fluoride out, you should also limit the amount of fluoride coming in, by investing in a water system that filters out fluoride. When you go at a pace that feels good for you, and the fluoride leaves your system, you’ll experience overall health improvements. If you liked this post, you may also like: Cooking with Fluoride
- Amazing Magnesium
Magnesium deficiency is rampant. While less than 2% of Americans have been estimated to experience magnesium deficiency, one study suggests that up to 75% are not meeting their recommended intake. In most cases, deficiency is often overlooked until the person becomes extremely symptomatic. Even then, a different health condition may be the diagnosis with no regard to magnesium deficiency being the actual cause. Epsom Salt - A Good Source of Magnesium Magnesium deficiency can be linked to many symptoms and diseases; most commonly muscle cramping and twitches, palpitations, anxiety and trouble sleeping. Here is an abbreviated list of hypomagnesemia’s most prominent symptoms: • hypertension and cardiovascular disease, palpitations, irregular heartbeat, atrial fibrillations • kidney and liver damage • migraine headaches • muscle cramps and fasciculations • other nutrient deficiencies, including vitamin K, calcium and potassium • restless leg syndrome • depression and anxiety • insomnia and trouble sleeping • osteoporosis • a depressed immune system • tooth cavities • bruxism • muscle weakness and cramps If you believe you may have a magnesium deficiency, your suspicions can be confirmed with a simple blood test. However this may not even be accurate, as a blood test will tell you how much magnesium is circulating, not how much is actually being absorbed. There are many good food sources of magnesium, but most people have compromised gut situations where they do not break down their food properly and as a result do not absorb magnesium (and other nutrients) efficiently. If you are looking for natural sources of magnesium, here is a list of the top ten foods: (the RDA for an adult is 300 -400 milligrams/day): 1. Spinach: 1 cup cooked: 157 milligrams 2. Swiss Chard: 1 cup cooked: 150 milligrams 3. Black Beans: 1 cup cooked: 120 milligrams 4. Mung Beans: 1 cup cooked: 97 milligrams 5. Almonds: ¼ cup: 97 milligrams 6. Cashews: ¼ cup: 91 milligrams 7. Potatoes: 1 large: 85 milligrams 8. Pumpkin Seeds: 1/4 cup: 42 milligrams 9. Avocado: 1 raw: 39 milligrams 10. Bananas: 1 banana: 37 milligrams Consequently, supplementation may be the best solution. Here is a list of magnesium supplements and their typical uses: • magnesium carbonate — used in antacids; strong laxative effect • magnesium citrate — most popular all-around magnesium supplement; moderate laxative effects • magnesium glycinate — considered ideal for correcting deficiency; has a calming effect, good for muscle issues • magnesium hydroxide — found in milk of magnesia; laxative, antacid • magnesium malate — fatigue, fibromyalgia, insomnia • magnesium taurate — high blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, calming • magnesium threonate - most readily enters the brain. Its unique ability to permeate brain cell membranes and elevate magnesium concentrations in the brain makes it particularly useful for treating anxiety and depression, and for cognitive enhancement. • magnesium oxide- only has 4% bioavailability, acts as a laxative • magnesium oil - a good source for transdermal supplementation, especially good for anyone with a compromised intestines or prone to diarrhea • magnesium chloride – can be mixed with water to make magnesium oil. Most effective for transdermal absorption • magnesium sulfate – also known as Epsom salt. Great for soaking in the tub to soothe tired muscles or transdermal supplementation There are few risks associated with magnesium supplementation. Most common is diarrhea, nausea or cramping. It is possible to take too much magnesium. To determine which magnesium is best for you, it is a good idea to speak with your educated health practitioner. - Enlightened Dentistry
Well, I finally have a Blog. Considering that my patients have told me for years that I should write a book, this is probably the next best thing, and certainly a good beginning to creating that reality. For those who know me as Dr. Brand, your friendly neighborhood holistic dentist, let me first say “Thank you”. Mostly for being there for me when times were tough, through my Lyme disability and my consequent chronic health problems that plagued me for years afterwards. I know many of you have called my story “inspirational” but truly, my story is your story. Many of you have given me specks of insight that have had me running for the next best cure of whatever needed curing. What happened to me could very easily have happened to you. And actually, for some of you, it did. So I hope this forum will give you the insights that you need to heal too. For those of you that haven’t met me, let me say “Welcome”. I hope that this will be a meeting place to share ideas and ideals of health, healing and well-being. So what is Enlightened Dentistry™? Good question. I’m glad that you asked. Well, since I trademarked the phrase, perhaps I should explain. First, let me say that conventional modern dentistry is good. Actually it is better than good, “Its Great!” (no Tony the Tiger pun intended). But as many of you know, it’s not perfect. If it were perfect, we wouldn’t have gone the route of Holistic Dentistry- a cutting edge field that encompasses the best of conventional dentistry with complementary and biomimetric techniques. So, Enlightened Dentistry™ came about when I realized that there had to be something more. More, because many of us replaced our amalgams, and had our root canal teeth extracted, yet still continued to be sick. And that’s when I realized that we need to remember that we are energetic beings more so than physical beings. So, when we shift the energetic field within us and around us, we will finally, truly heal. It worked for me and I believe that it can work for you. And for those of you who have been to the office, you know this first hand when you experience the shift to relaxation with a 2-minute tune up. Believing is seeing. The power of the mind to create health has been proven. And when we believe that we can be healed, we will be. So today’s healing hint is simple: Be grateful. Grateful that you can breathe on you own, that your arms and legs work, that your eyes can read this blog, that you have food on the table, a roof over your head, friends or family that care about you, a pet that loves you, a better job opportunity that is coming along, and grateful to be living in a free society where your only limitation is your own belief systems. So next time, before you go to bed, “count your blessings instead of sheep”. And watch how your life will change in the next 24 hours. Thank you Bing Crosby (from the movie White Christmas). Happy Holidays!
- Are My Mercury Fillings Bad For Me?
Elemental mercury is the second most toxic substance on the planet; and it is in every single one of those pretty silver fillings in your mouth. As a holistic dentist, the most frequent question that I am usually asked is: “Are these mercury fillings really bad for me?” And the answer is: “It depends.” It depends on what you consider “bad”. Now for some people “bad” means having chronic health issues that don’t resolve. For others, “bad” means having to deal with crazy symptoms that have no explainable cause and no reasonable treatment. And for the rest of you, “bad” means having medical doctors who are ready to write you off as a troublemaker because they can’t cure you with the latest and greatest brightly colored pill. As for me, I don’t think like that. ”Bad” means simply “not good”. There are so many toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Most of them are insidious... hidden in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the environment we live and work in; and of course, also picked up from the people we spend time with. Knowing that you are exposed to thousands of these hidden toxins daily, wouldn’t it make sense to take some control and remove the ones that you do know about? Yes. I think so. So to answer the original question: Let’s not argue if a known toxin is “bad” for you; let’s just handle it by replacing it with something that is more “good”. End of discussion. I am sure that you have wondered why immune system illnesses (cancers, persistent infections, etc.) are on the rise, why neurological illnesses (Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Autism, learning disabilities, etc.) are prevalent, and why chronic health challenges (diabetes, migraines, digestive, respiratory etc.) are now considered the norm. Well, many recent studies have shown that these illnesses (and others) are all implicated with heavy metal toxicity. And mercury is a heavy metal. Let’s review some facts: · Mercury is a known neurotoxin. It destroys the myelin sheath (outside covering) of your nerve cells. · It is fat soluble and easily crosses the bloodbrain barrier. Brain tissue has a very high percentage of fat in its neuronal makeup. · Mercury crosses the placental membrane, easily affecting your unborn child. · Mercury is found in dental fillings, contaminated seafood and vaccines. · EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has issued regulations that require industry to reduce mercury release to air and water and to properly treat and dispose of mercury wastes. Being prescription drug-free and healthy in this society is actually a rarity, usually associated with being young and having good genetics. I can assure you from personal experience, that being vigorous is a birthright that all of us can attain, if we just educate ourselves and make smarter decisions. Detoxification of heavy metals is critical to keeping or regaining your health. Information is all over the internet. No excuses. If you liked this posting, you may also like: The Flaws of Fluoride
- Seaweed Salad Anyone?
For those of you who are interested in eating healthier, I will occasionally be posting simple superfood recipes that anyone can do. Most are pretty easy and quite delicious. They are meant to be packed with concentrated nutrition that will nourish your body and soul. If you are already eating raw or organic or vegan, let me first say “Congratulations”. You are definitely way ahead of at least 95% of the people in this country. However, there is still room for improvement. You can bet that your fruits and veggies are not as nutrition-rich as the same fruits and veggies that we used to eat 30 years ago. Most produce has been grown on soil that is so used and reused, that the bulk of the minerals in its earth has been depleted. Minerals in our diet are definitely at an all time low. Some of this is also due to the over processing of our foods in their preparation. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is indeed very, very SAD. If you are finding yourself on edge most of the time, anxious, unable to sleep, getting heart palpitations or muscle twitches, then you are probably mineral deficient. So how do we remedy this? By adding sea vegetables to our diet. They are definitely a high source of minerals, and if eaten on a regular basis, will create a new level of health and vitality in your life. These veggies are also high in chlorophyll content and will have a wonderful effect on helping you to detoxify and feel strong. Due to popular demand, I am disclosing my secret recipe for seaweed salad. Many of you have heard it before, since I love to talk about eating healthy when you have come to visit at your dental appointments. But it can be a bit challenging to write recipes down on paper when I have a drill in one hand and a mouth mirror in the other. If the thought of eating seaweed scares you, try halving the recipe below and give it a taste. You will be pleasantly surprised by its sesame seed flavor, and may very well permanently change your perception of sea vegetables forever. So here it is. Dr. Brand's Seaweed Salad 1 oz. cut up wakame (most bags are 2 oz.) 1 TBSP toasted sesame oil 1 TBSP umeboshi vinegar (pickled plum juice) 3 TBSP apple cider vinegar Optional: ground ginger Cut the dried wakame into 1 inch pieces with a sharp kitchen scissor. Place in a large bowl and soak in COLD water for about 20 minutes. Then let cold water run through it for a few minutes to remove any sediment. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel or cloth towel. Place the clean dry seaweed in a bowl. Add the 3 other ingredients. Toss and serve. Note: You can add more toasted sesame oil if you feel that it has a somewhat fishy flavor. You can add more umeboshi vinegar for a saltier taste. The basic recipe as followed above will give you a delicious seaweed salad. You can eat it straight or with dumplings or sushi or miso soup (another easy healthy food to make). Or even add it to your conventional salad as a condiment. Unlike conventional recipes, there is no sugar and no soy. So there is no excuse. Try it and see what you think. And if you find ways to improve on it, let me know! Anecdotal story: One patient has eaten this consistently for a week before her menstrual period and for the first time in her life she had no menstrual discomforts –no cramps, no nausea, no lower back pain, no hot/cold flashes. How’s that for a cure! If you like this posting, you may also like: Green Drinks Bone Soup Benefits of Raw Chocolate
- The Flaws of Fluoride
In light of the recent stance by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) along with the Center for Disease Control (CDC), that our youth are over fluoridated, I think it is timely to review this topic. The government first began encouraging municipal water systems to add fluoride in the early 1950s. Since then, fluoride has been put in toothpaste and mouthwash. It is also in a lot of tap waters, bottled waters, and most drinks made from them, including soda and reconstituted juices. Additionally, some children even take fluoride supplements. Since 1962, the fluoridated water standard has been in a range of 0.7 parts per million for warmer climates where people drink more water, to 1.2 parts per million in cooler regions. The new proposal from HHS would set the recommended level at just 0.7. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it is reviewing whether to lower the maximum allowable level of fluoride in drinking water from the current 4 parts per million. As a result of this fluoride overdosing, there has been an increase in discoloration of our children’s teeth. Sure the enamel is stronger and less likely to have decay, but who wants to smile with splotchy pearly browns and yellows? Dental Fluorosis Dentally, this condition of fluorosis is not easily corrected. No amount of whitening (possibly more fluoride) will make it disappear. One is usually left with an alternative of a dental cosmetic makeover – a somewhat costly and time-consuming endeavor, or the cheaper alternative – don’t smile with teeth showing. This is not what I would call conservative healthy dentistry. Actually it is iatrogenic- preventing one dental disease (decay) but creating an entirely new one (yellow, brown splotchy teeth) as a side effect. Sort of like when the surgeon says that the operation was a success, but unfortunately we accidentally punctured your kidney. There is no justification for this. None. So here are the facts: 1) NYC’s fluoride chemicals, hydrofluosilicic acid, are waste products of phosphate fertilizer manufacturing, scraped from smokestacks to prevent toxic air emissions, trucked as hazardous waste and injected, unpurified, into NYC’s water supply along with trace amounts of lead arsenic and mercury (see our Enlightened Indigo blog on Heavy Metal Toxicity for further information). 2) 1% – 5% of the population is allergic to or intolerant of fluoride. 3) The CDC reports that over 41% of adolescents are fluoride-overdosed which shows up as dental fluorosis – white spotted, yellow, brown and/or spotted teeth. 4) Fluoridation cost NYC approximately $25 million in 2008. 5) Studies show high tooth decay rates in NYC populations studied, despite decades of fluoridation. See: http/www.freewebs.com/fluoridation/fluoridationfailsnewyork.htm 6) Fluoride is not an essential nutrient. http/www.fluoridealert.org/health/infant/essential.html 7) Fluoride ingestion does not reduce tooth decay. Fluoride’s predominant anti-caries effect is topical, not systemic. 8) In 2006, a National Research Council panel of experts released a report which shows that fluoride, even at low doses added to water supplies, can harm kidney patients, the thyroid gland, high water drinkers and babies. They also found studies linking fluoride to lowered IQ and cancer plausible. http/www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=11571 9) Fluoride is in virtually all foods and beverages from fluoride-containing pesticide residues and fluoridated water used in processing. USDA chart: http/www.ars.usda.gov/Services/docs.htm?docid=6312 10) Fluoride safety has never been approved by the FDA. http/fluoridedangers.blogspot.com/2005/12/fluoride-never-fda-approved-for.htm 11) The water supply should not be used as a drug delivery system to individuals without regard to age, weight, health, need, and informed consent. Fluoride is the only water additive intended to treat people and not the water. Can we point fingers and blame the government or the ADA or the dentist? Maybe. But that still won’t solve the problem anytime soon. We need to be consciously aware of what we are ingesting and take our own action to get this poison out of our drinking water. Aside from dental fluorosis, long term ingesting of fluoride can cause skeletal fluorosis, a fluoride-induced bone and joint disease that mimics rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Does this make you think twice about those body aches and pains that you thought were due to aging? I think so. Now would be a good time to consider getting a water filter for fluoride (Alumina or Reverse Osmosis) or access quality spring water. Beginning a detox for the fluoride that has been accumulating in your body would also be a step in the right direction. - Radiation everywhere. Vacations included.
I had everything planned. A simple relaxing one week vacation on a cruise ship, lots of options for a detoxing week (access to the gym, sauna, steam room, swimming pools, and whirlpool), meditation in solitude on a quiet spot on the ship’s deck, options of health building food, evening entertainment and quiet restorative sleep in my cabin. And the best part about this was that the ship was leaving right here from NYC. There would be no hassle of airports and everything that goes with it. Nope. It wasn’t meant to be. The cabin that I was assigned had a heavy smell of cigarette smoke. Hoping to get a change of cabin assignment, I immediately went to the Purser’s desk to see what could be done. No change was possible at this time, but they would “freshen up" the room. They assured me that if there was a problem later; they would change rooms for me then. I was doubtful that this “freshening up” would do the trick, but the woman assured me that it would. Surprise. Two hours later, my room had not an iota of cigarette smoke, but now smelled chlorine bleach fresh, like a swimming pool. Not perfect, but definitely endurable. Or so I thought. After about an hour in the room, both my husband and I had burning throats, burning eyes, and a bit of coughing to deal with. Actually it was so bad that my husband actually coughed up blood. Further speaking with the Purser’s desk people revealed that there were now no cabins to switch to for the duration of the cruise, and that I should have said something at the beginning before they set sail. I thought I already did thispart. Obviously short term memory is not their forte. This now left us with 2 options. Either sleep on the deck or get off at the first stop. We opted for the 2nd choice. While aborting a 7-day vacation on a cruise ship is not an easy choice, for us it was the only choice. We made the most of the remaining week after we disembarked, finding lodgings and relaxation as a last minute plan. One thing I know for sure, there are no great bargains to be had when you are booking everything last minute, including the airline tickets. And this brings me to my experience at the airport. We have all heard about these new full body x-ray scanners at the airport, but I was definitely not expecting to finally meet one when I was going through Security. Full Body Scanner Machine at the Airport Yes, we are all familiar with the 1-second metal detector walk-through machine. But the new radiation exposing apparatus was absolutely intimidating. I watched person after person go through this refrigerator size machine with their hands in the air, and just stand there second after second after second getting irradiated. Surely this could not be healthy for anyone. Not knowing what the outcome would be, I asked the security officer if there were another option to THIS radiation exposure. “Yes”, he said. I could be patted down. With no hesitation, I immediately said “Okay”. He tried to talk me out of the pat down and reassured me that the radiation exposure was minimal, but every cell of my being said that what he told me could never be right. He, like the masses that work there, have been indoctrinated to believe that this stuff is actually harmless. Just as harmless as mammograms, radiation therapy and CAT scans that can leave you with many cumulative chronic side effects. I think I’ll pass. Even though the media has played the pat down as personally intrusive, I figured I’d take my chances. Radiation exposure is not reversible. The pat down was an easy choice. After I got home, I decided to see what is the real radiation exposure from these full body scan machines; and how would it compare to more customary radiation exposure. This is what I found: Mammogram- 0.4 to 3.0 mSv Chest x-ray- 0.02 to 0.1 mSv Airplane flight from NY to LA-.04 mSv Dental intraoral x-ray-0.005 mSv (digital is about 90% less than this) Bone Density (DEXA) 0.001 mSv Dental Digital intraoral x-ray-0.0005 mSv Full body scan machine atairport - .00003 to 0.0001 mSv per scan This was really eye opening when I looked at everything in perspective. On the surface it really does appear that these scanners are very low radiation. But further exploration revealed some other interesting aspects about these machines. The experts say that the low level beam delivers a small dose of radiation to the body but because the beam concentrates on the skin - one of the most radiation-sensitive organs of the human body - that dose may be up to 20 times higher than first estimated. Wow!! In particular, children and passengers with gene mutations -around one in 20 of the general population - are more at risk for skin cancer, as they are less able to repair x-ray damage to their DNA. Double Wow! Furthermore, the type of skin cancer usually caused by this type of radiation is basal cell carcinoma and it will probably not even appear until decades later. And the unfortunate part is that we will still probably blame it on too much sun exposure! A major concern that I found in all my research is the lack of monitoring of the output of these machines once installed. So if you just happen to be one of the unlucky ones who gets irradiated by a faulty machine, you would never know it, until years later when you had a cancer of some type. And even then, you would never figure that it was caused by the cumulative effect of x-rays. Since cancers of all types are on the rise, why would anyone willingly submit to this type of exposure? And if you are a frequent flyer, this routine radiation dose, like any radiation dose, will just be adding on itself, cumulatively, creating all kinds of mutagenic activity in your body. Triple Wow! This is very unlike medical/dental x-ray machines which are calibrated daily and inspected by the city at regular time intervals. And the redeeming quality of medical/dental x-rays is that at least it is diagnostic and may even help with evaluating you health or saving your life. There are just so many toxins in our environment- pesticides, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, plastics, heavy metals, drugs, pollution, EMFs, background radiation. The list is literally endless. And the unfortunate part is we don’t even know that we are being exposed to them. They are insidious and hidden. So why would we knowingly and willingly submit to extra “safe” airport radiation when there is a simple non-toxic choice of a pat down? Thermograpy or ultrasound may be a better choice for future airport security. But until the system advances, take precaution and protect yourself. So here are some good ideas to protect you from extraneous radiation, whether diagnostic or otherwise: 1. Sea vegetables, commonly known as sea weeds, such as kelp, purple dulse, wakame, and sea lettuce are high in iodine. Sea spaghetti, nori, and kombu are other sea vegetables to consider. One quarter teaspoon of kelp provides 3 mg of iodine. Sea vegetables contain sodium alginate, a natural chelator. Chelation is the process of drawing toxins to a certain food and then releasing it from the body through the colon or kidneys. Alginates in sea vegetables not only reduce the amount of strontium-90 absorbed by the bones by over 50%, but they also bind other heavy metals, such as lead, plutonium, and cesium. Green juice powders are particularly an easy way to get your sea vegetables. See our blog on Green Drinks for insights. 2. Bee pollen and bee propolis are two other super foods to consider for protection against radiation. Bee pollen has a surprising number of positive benefits and applications. It provides a high content of the nucleic acids RNA and DNA. It is also reported that bee propolis is effective in clinical stages of radioepithelitis, the inflammation of epithelial (skin) tissues due to radiation. 3. Citrus fruits and especially grapefruits, are high in a bioflavonoid called naringin. Naringin is a free radical scavenger. Naringin was found to prevent chromosomal damage from radiation in mouse bone marrow. Therefore, it may reduce cellular damage in humans caused by radiation. Citrus fruits are also high in rutin, a flavonoid glycoside which strengthens capillary walls and reduces hemorrhaging after x-ray exposure. 4. Use homeopathy to offset any radiation exposure. 5. Add high amounts of anti-oxidants. They are always found in the most colorful fruits and vegetables. Add super foods to your diet or take supplements to enrich this. 6. Do digital x-rays, ultrasound or thermographs whenever possible instead of conventional x-rays. 7. Use EMF protectors on yourself, your cell phone and in your home. 8. Do the pat down at the airport. An easy solution. Ultimately, you are the only one who will be responsible for your own health. Own it. If you like this posting, you may like: Oil Pulling Invisible Toxins
- Body Brushing: A Daily Habit Like Tooth Brushing
Dry skin brushing is one of the healthiest self-help methods available to us today. The best part is that it takes seconds to do, can be done in the comfort of your own home, and is painless and cost free. Variationsof skin brushing have been practiced for thousands of years. For many centuries, the Japanese employed vigorous skin brushing with loofah sponges as a prelude to their traditional hot bath. Prior to bathing (following a hard training session or physical competition), ancient Greek athletes used strigiles --specialized, spoon-like skin scrapers to remove the grime of exertion, and to encourage circulation. Among the American Indians, skin brushing with dried corn cobs to enhance skin beauty and durability was once a traditional practice. Others scrubbed their skin using sand from river bottoms. Presently, Gua Sha is a variation of skin brushing and is practiced in Chinese Acupuncture. So why is this technique so enduring? Bottom line: it works! The skin is as major an organ as the heart, lungs and kidneys. Its primary functions include respiration, excretion, blood circulation, lymph circulation, immunity and the conduction of Vital Chi. However, unlike other vital organs, the skin can be non-invasively accessed and mediate systemic rejuvenation by a variety of therapeutic techniques, including proper skin brushing. Brushing of the skin sets in motion natural healing pathways within your body by stimulating nerve beds within its structure. This, in turn increases normal healing processes throughout the entire body. Dry skin brushing promotes movement of the lymphatic system which can become stagnant or thick due to overload of toxins in the body or during an intense detoxification cleansing program. It will give your lymph system a kick start and help you feel refreshed and invigorated. Skin is the largest organ in the human body. It is responsible for one fourth of the body’s detoxification, most of it through sweat. It eliminates two pounds of waste acids each day. So for those of us who are trying to be our healthiest, it would make sense to incorporate daily this simple detoxification technique. It will change the health of your whole body. Circulation improves, your skin becomes softer and healthier, and whole body wellness is enhanced. Your level of immunity increases and even common infections, dental or otherwise, can be prevented. So how do we get started with this amazing technique? See below. How to do Dry Skin Brushing 1. Purchase a natural, NOT a synthetic, bristle brush. 2. Purchase a brush with a long handle, so that you are able to reach all areas of your body. 3. Skin brushing should be performed once a day, preferably first thing in the morning. If you are feeling ill, please do it twice a day until you feel better. 4. Skin brushing should be performed prior to your bath or shower and your body should be dry. It might even be smart to do it while standing in the tub, so that dry skin can be washed away in the shower afterward. 5. Begin brushing your skin in long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards, and from the hands towards the shoulders, and on the torso in an upward direction. Always brush towards the lymph glands so that toxins can be more easily released. Try and brush several times in each area, over-lapping as you go. Note: Major lymph glands are located under the jaw, at the underarms and in the groin areas. If this is too difficult to remember, then just brush towards the heart and 90% of the time you will be going in the right direction. 6. Avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken. If anything hurts when you do it, then avoid those areas or do it gently until it becomes more tolerable. 7. For a thorough lymphatic cleansing, perform skin brushing daily for a minimum of three months. 8. Sit back and accept compliments from your friends that you are actually looking younger and healthier than ever! Please do not skin brush if you have any varicose veins, painful rashes or open wounds. An Ideal Brush for Skin Brushing There are so many different ways to do it, but basically if it feels good, then you are doing it right. RIGHT NOW would be the perfect time to be investing in your health. So if you haven’t already picked up a brush to try this self healing technique, maybe this might motivate you. The Benefits Of Dry Skin Brushing • Dry skin brushing helps to shed dead skin cells, which can help improve skin texture and cell renewal. • Dry skin brushing increases circulation to skin, encouraging your body’s discharge of metabolic wastes, which greatly aids the lymphatic drainage of the entire body. When the body rids itself of toxins, it is able to run more efficiently in all areas. • Dry skin brushing also helps to tighten the skin because it increases the flow of blood. • Dry skin brushing stimulates the lymph canals to drain toxic mucus matter into the colon, thereby purifying the entire system. This enables the lymph to perform its house-cleaning duties by keeping the blood and other vital tissues detoxified. • Dry skin brushing helps with muscle tone and more even distribution of fat deposits. • Dry skin brushing also rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin. • Dry skin brushing helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores. Healthy, breathing skin contributes to overall body health. • Individuals who sit at a computer screen all day long will particularly take pleasure in the benefits of skin brushing. People who have inactive lifestyles or jobs usually experience stiff and sore necks and shoulders that reach even into their arms and down their spines and into their lower backs. Increased blood flow begins entering the areas brushed and you will experience an increase in electromagnetic energy that permits you to feel energized and invigorated. It’s almost like a mini massage. • Dry skin brushing may help with the break down of cellulite. Cellulite is the accumulation of toxic materials in your body’s fat cells. Utilizing dry skin brushing with an alkaline diet program and a great exercising routine may just eliminate cellulite forever. It will break down the toxic body deposits and send them out of your body through the elimination channels we discussed above. We wash our skin everyday. We protect it from the sun's harmful rays. We rub everything from baby oil to the most expensive lotions on it. But we should not forget that brushing (teeth and skin) is one of the simplest healthiest things we can do for ourselves. The skin is the last to receive nutrients in the body, yet the first to show signs of imbalance or deficiency. Give it your attention and it will return the favor by promoting your glow of health, inside and out. You deserve it! - The Health Rewards of Energy Healing: Reiki
Although most people are skeptical of Energy Medicine, there is a real science to it. And it works. The question most frequently asked is “How does it work?” Reasonable enough. I too am a person of science, so I need an explanation. Well, here’s the scoop. We have all heard about the Energy Field – that invisible science phenomenon that most of us can’t see and know nothing about. Energy Healing is based on the premise that we are more than our physical bodies. We also have an energy body made up of our aura, chakras (energy centers) and meridians (energy pathways). Like our physical body that takes in food to nourish it and give it strength, our energy body does the same but with energy instead of food. That is why it is so toxic to be near EMF generators (cell phones, computers, microwaves, etc.) and so beneficial to be near healthy frequencies (waterfalls, beaches, happy people). The energy fields take energy in, the chakras break it down, and the meridians distribute it throughout the body. We are all familiar with meditation, the ability to quiet our mind and thoughts, by going within to achieve great relaxation and significant healing. This is the Energy Medicine of self- healing. And all of us can do this if we take the time to practice and perfect it. Reiki can achieve the same end result, except you don’t have to work as hard to attain it. You just need to be attuned to its frequency and educated on how to harness it. Fot this reason, Reiki is so important. Reiki is a complementary healing technique that works with the energy body, to shift it into a state of healing. And the great thing about it is that it is more than a self-healing technique; you can heal your friends, family, pets, plants and even your relationships. Time and distance are not an issue, since energy can travel instantaneously. Sort of like when you want your friend to call you and then the phone rings with him on the other end. Unlike other energy healing modalities, Reiki is certifiable (certificate diplomas usually given when each level is completed) and recognizable (most people have heard of it). And that is why I love teaching it. It is simple enough to learn, usually in one day. And the more you use it, the more proficient you become at mastering it. Greater competencies and capabilities can be achieved by taking additional classes on it, as well as other types of energy healing. Personally, I have found that learning other energy healing modalities have made me a more well rounded Reiki Master. Healing Hands of Reiki The Science Conventional medicine works on the theory of Newtonian physics: There’s a direct relationship between cause and effect. To change a particle (illness, imbalance) you must directly work on the particle. Makes sense, but as we have seen with many illnesses, this doesn’t always work so well. If it did, we would have the cure for every disease. Energy (holistic) medicine recognizes that there is more to affecting change than going directly after the symptom. Sometimes you have to affect the field to create a shift in the particle; like listening to uplifting music to change your emotional state which will ultimately affect your physical health. This is based on Quantum physics: using indivisible units of energy called quanta to affect the field around it. And this theory basis of Quantum physics explains the precepts behind Energy Medicine, inclusive of Reiki. When you can harness these unseen forces, you can affect healing on all levels. Indulge yourself and treat yourself to the relaxing healing energies of Reiki.(Call for an appointment) Better yet, empower yourself and learn this healing art to enlighten your own energy field and delight your friends. - Choosing a Holistic Dentist
Many years ago, when I first learned about the possible health hazards associated with mercury fillings, I went to a holistic dentist to have my mercury fillings removed. Not a big deal. Just a couple of fillings. And I certainly was educated enough to know that I wanted a dentist who knew how to do this with the proper safety protocol so that I would be protected when this toxic material was removed from my teeth. So imagine my surprise when this “holistic” dentist told me that the only way she would replace my fillings was if I had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted and some major restorative work that would open my bite. Bear in mind, my asymptomatic wisdom teeth were fully erupted in my mouth and perfectly functional. I agree that some of my other teeth were a little bit worn (I like to eat), but certainly nothing that I would consider as a full mouth reconstruction case. So I remember sitting in the dental chair wondering how could she say this to me, a dental colleague, and expect me to accept this. She has got to be kidding! And why would she offer me this aggressive diagnosis? It certainly did not seem holistic at all, extracting healthy teeth and crowning other healthy teeth. I wasn’t looking for a makeover; I was looking for a healthier mouth. This treatment plan actually seemed quite invasive and traumatic for my perfectly happy healthy mouth. I should mention that when this occurred, I had already been a practicing dentist for over 20 years, so I already knew much about dentistry. I listened politely to what this dentist told me, and left. Needless to say, I did not have my teeth treated there. Actually, I ended up having my mercury fillings replaced elsewhere; and I can happily report that all of my wisdom teeth are still fully intact (10 years later) and my slightly worn teeth are still slightly worn and serviceable. So the reason that I tell you this story is for you to realize that it is always important to get a second opinion on any suggested dental treatment that you feel is not right. My point is that even though I am a dentist and I went to a dentist, that doesn’t mean that they would treat me any different than you. Actually, it took me three tries before I found a dentist who actually listened to what I wanted and didn’t inflict their insidious aggressive treatment on me. And I need to point out that the dentist who finally did my mercury filling removal was not a dentist that was labeled “holistic”. But in all actuality, he was probably more holistic and naturally oriented than the "holistic" dentists that I did see. Lesson learned: listen to your intuitive wisdom (teeth) and choose your dentist wisely. This applies to choosing other health practitioners as well. - An Attitude of Gratitude
Earthquake on Tuesday. Hurricane on Saturday. This week isn’t over yet. What’s next? While some of us may be thinking tsunami, especially due to the recent events in Japan, my head doesn’t go there. I’m thinking personal "me time" to take a break and recuperate. Sometimes the Universe and Mother Nature give us obvious messages that most of us totally miss: Slow down and reevaluate your priorities in life. Many of us have been going a million miles an hour, running from here to there and everywhere; for work, the kids, your spouse, your parents, your friends. Whatever happened to “me time”. You know, the time when you sit, breathe, rest, breathe again, rest some more and actually contemplate the meaning of life, particularly yours. A wise craniosacral therapist I visited many years ago told me, “We are human beings, not human doings. So just be”. Easier said than done. But this weekend is the perfect time to "just be". While many of us may be glued to the television waiting anxiously for updates about the hurricane, realize that you may be getting an overload of too much information. Almost to the point where you may be in an unconscious state of anxiety causing an overload of cortisol in your bloodstream. Definitely not a good place to be. No wonder you don’t sleep well and are exhausted most of the time. I know it’s important to be updated, but how many hours can you hear the same story of doom and gloom. Let’s be intelligent. Have everything you need just in case this becomes a real emergency situation, and then just sit back and relax. Read a good book, watch an uplifting video, and perhaps meditate about all the good that you have in your life; your work, the kids, your spouse, your parents, your friends. And if this isn’t enough, how about your home, your health, and your ability to connect with others through the internet, even at a time like this. An attitude of gratitude will bring you further in life than all the worrying in the world. Start now. And watch your life ascend to higher levels of health and peacefulness. P.S. - Healthy Children Have Healthy Teeth
Tooth decay is one of the biggest health issues among children, accounting for over 51 million hours of school time lost every year. What’s more, poor dental health in youth can lead to chronic dental and other health problems. Discomfort, difficulty chewing and the need for painful and expensive procedures can all be prevented. We just need to take good care of our children’s dental health now, and instill some happy dental memories for our children. So the question is: How do we do this? And the answer is: · Don’t wait until your child says her tooth hurts. · Don’t wait until you see a big hole or black spot onyour child’s tooth. · Don’t wait until your child’s gums are bleeding. After the age of 2, most kids have all their baby teeth. And by the age of 3, they should be coming for their first dental check up. This is the perfect age for them since they can now talk and cooperate with us. Photo credit Creative Commons: Patrick If they have healthy teeth, it is even more important that they come for a visit, so that they can familiarize themselves with the dental office and find that this can be a fun happy place. Every 3-year-old loves to go for a ride in the dental chair and have his or her teeth counted (charted) and tickled (cleaned). Especially since they have a big face mirror to hold on to so that they can watch EVERYTHING. When most of us remember the dentist of our youth, usually memories of fear and pain come with it. It doesn’t have to be that way for your children. By bringing them in for regular routine visits, before the dental problems occur, they will develop positive memories of their childhood dentist. Statistics are staggering. More than one-half of all children aged 5 to 9 years have at least one cavity or filling. Also on the rise among elementary age children is tooth decay in seven or more teeth. It’s almost an epidemic. A painful tooth or chronic dental problem can lead to difficulty in eating, speaking and concentrating. Children with dental pain may not always voice their problem. They may appear anxious, depressed or tired, and teachers may not recognize their pain. Dental problems also cause many children to miss school. An annual back-to-school dental checkup is an easy way to help prevent these problems. It’s so important, that several states — including New York, California, Oregon— actually require children to get a dental exam before entering public school. Regular dental exams do more than catch tooth decay. They also let us see if teeth are growing in properly, monitor the results of tooth brushing and flossing techniques and allow us to apply protective sealants (there is no bisphenol A or BPA in our sealants) that can prevent decay before it happens. In addition, parents of young athletes should discuss mouth guards with their dentist before returning to school sports. Mouth guards prevent painful and expensive oral injuries. If your kids play sports or engage in other activities that can impact their teeth, it is important to have them fitted for a mouth guard - a simple easy visit. In addition to maintaining regular brushing and flossing habits, other tips to prevent tooth decay include: Buy new toothbrushes: While they’re getting new notebooks, pens and other supplies, why not let them pick out a new toothbrush? While you’re at it, pick up two — one for home and one to bring to school. Make a dental care kit for school: To encourage them to brush after lunch and snacks, buy a zippered plastic-lined bag and include a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss. Pack dental-friendly lunches and snacks: Fruit, nuts, string cheese and bottled water are all good choices. Avoid sticky foods like raisins or fruit leather, as they can cause cavities. Talk to your dentist about sealants, a protective coating applied to decay-vulnerable teeth. Limit intake of food and beverages high in added sugars. Look for desserts sweetened with xylitol- a known anti-cariogenic sweetener. Reduce between-meal snacks. Floss and brush after every meal. Start a reward system: Encourage good dental exams like you encourage good grades — with a prize like a night at the movies, a new video game or other coveted item. Cavities remain the most common chronic diseaseof childhood. A disease which affects how children learn to speak, ability to chew food, affects self-confidence and causes missed days at school -- and can even result in emergency room visits. Left untreated, dental disease can be very painful, costly and lead to other serious lifelong health issues. We need to set good examples for our children by showing them the proper way to attain and keep their good health. Each of us should be coming twice a year for a check up and cleaning. Call your dentist’s office now to make that appointment. We look forward to helping you have a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.
