Rebuilding Bone Naturally

As a dentist, I have seen many patients with significant jaw bone loss. This is not a good thing as it is a marker for loose teeth and eventual tooth loss. Sometimes it may be associated with the usual symptoms of periodontal disease and you should  read our previous post Floss First! for further clarity. But other times, the periodontal health looks fairly normal with minimal pocketing and no bleeding.



Bone Loss around Teeth


Upon seeing this bone loss, my primary question to the patient is “Have you had a bone density test?” And if they have had one, they already know that they have a bone density challenge (osteoporosis or osteopenia). If they haven’t had one yet and they do go, it is not surprising to find that they are usually low on the bone density scale.

 

As many of you are already aware, your mouth health is a reflection of your body health, and many dentists can infer quite a bit by a comprehensive oral evaluation. (See Meridian Dentistry and Saliva Secrets: pH )

 

For those of you trying to reverse bone loss naturally, here is a base recipe of nutrients that may help. There are other specific factors depending on which bones are actually involved (jaw, legs, arms or spine) but those can be addressed individually if you ask at your appointment.

 

These are the suggested nutrients necessary to rebuild human bone:


Strontium. (at least a 1000 mg). It should be taken on an empty stomach, away from other minerals and away from food

Vitamin D3. (3000 – 5000 IU). Best to take with fatty food, or it will not be absorbed. You might also consider having your blood levels tested. It’s a simple blood test. Ideally your blood levels should be over 60.

Minerals. Best way to get mineral supplementation is by taking a daily dose of gray Celtic salt. You can buy it at many health food stores. A good daily dose would be ½ teaspoon of the salt followed with 2 glasses of quality water. You can do a1/4 teaspoon twice a day if it is easier. The 2 glasses of water each time is still necessary. You can also put this salt on food. There are 84 minerals in gray Celtic salt. (see The Miracle of Minerals)  It will not raise your blood pressure since the sodium content is very low. If you take it away from food, it will be absorbed more efficiently. DO NOT TAKE AT THE SAME TIME AS THE STRONTIUM. They will compete with each other and the strontium will not be absorbed.

Magnesium. Taking additional supplementation of Magnesium will activate Vitamin D (from the sun).

Vitamin K2. Found in grass fed meat, free range chickens and eggs, and almost all REAL fermented foods. (Not the make-believe yogurt found in most supermarkets).

Collagen supplements. You can buy this in powdered form, add to smoothies , or buy in capsule form. You can get collagen naturally by making a bone soup. (See The Benefits of Bone Soup)

Weight bearing exercise. You can stand on one leg for 3 minutes and then do the other leg for 3 minutes. This is the equivalent of an hour’s walk in terms of stimulating bone growth. You can also do weight lifting daily with 2-5 lb. weights.

Make sure your cholesterol is at least 180. If it is too low, you will not make enough Vitamin D.

• Contrary to popular dogma, taking Calcium supplements alone will not create more bone. It must be taken with Vitamin K2 to actually be absorbed into the bone.

Use of a mini trampoline (rebounder) has also shown to be beneficial in stimulating bone growth. (See Jump Your Way to Health!)

• Drugs used for osteoporosis (for example, Fosamax) do not create new bone. They simply prevent death of old bone. The bone that is there is dry, brittle and styrofoam-like. It is prone to fracture as much as having osteoporosis. It just looks good on the bone density test.


As you restore the integrity of your skeletal bones, you may find that the bone supporting your teeth may also improve. There are other factors involved with the dental bone but these are the basics. You should see a difference in bone density within a year.

Have you read up on oil pulling. If you are wanting to heal your oral health by pulling the toxins out of your teeth, along with regrowing your bones. And remember you dental health is more heavily affected by your diet.

Thanks for info my partner has been told to remove 11 upper teeth but all ok on bottom this is demoralizing as he has battled pancreatic ca 10 years and is hanging in there we are in seattle any more to read?

HI there! Was 18 when I had both bottom bicuspids removed resulting in shifting and bone loss for 9 years. Had braces for a 3rd time and got dental implants. I have had constant clicking and cracking in both sides for a year now. I need to wear my retainers in order to keep them straight. However, I believe this minimizes any potential for bone growth around the implants and surrounding teeth. I feel as if there has been even more resorption from the surrounding teeth to keep up with the implants. I've stopped wearing the bottom retainer and will try to take these minerals! Considering I may want them removed and get bone grafting, but it is so costly! Any thoughts? Thx!

I'm 15 and I think I have dental bone loss. I got the 2nd to the last molar extracted 3 years ago, and my last molar shifted towards the space where my tooth once was. I'm too young for implants and bone grafting. Is there anyway to reverse these effects? I really don't want to develop facial asymmetry, but it feels like my left jaw feels slightly smaller. Help!


You are not alone this happened to me also and I'm 100% sure of it. I am so sad and I don't know how to fix it. My wisdom teeth on both sides all of a sudden started having issues with the left being wayy worse than the right. It was literally coming off in chunks and crumbling like powder in my mouth. I had it pulled and since then my cheek bone on the left side has shrunk and the fat on that side has been lost. This all happened in a span of several months. I keep comparing it and I know my face is different now.There is a darkness where the bone shrunk. It gives a shadow now and looks very flat compared to the other side. I also developed a very deep fold near my nose where the fat has left. I have never been so upset in my life. My face is destroyed and that was the only thing I liked about myself.

Does jaw bone loss ever stop ? I don't see anything in the recommended diet that really stands out and that would compromise my medical condition. Which is Epilepsy. I take 600 mg of extended release Lamictal at bedtime.But what is Strontium? Thank you for any advice that you could give to me.

I am presently trying to find holistic approach for periodontal disease(3 deep pockets with bone loss)On reading up on strontium there is some concern regarding it's safety.(some say that it competes with calcium and that it causes the outer cortical bone to become thicker reducing tensile strength)Just curious as to your opinion-I find it a challenge as to what to take in regards to dental bone loss in this respect.Many thanks for your time, and for your informative articles.

I've been to a dentist and a specialist recently and I have some boneless around my bottom front teeth and the first said I would lose the four teeth and then said I could keep them with a certain procedure. I'm only 32 and would do anything to keep the teeth and have a straight answer. One of the first questions asked was whether I had a lot of money or not .. weird! Any help would be fantastic ..

Thank you for this helpful information. I recently purchased a bone density supplement. I have a lot of trouble with my teeth. After taking the supplement for a year, could a person then stop the supplement? Or does it need to be taken continuously?

Thank you for this article, I have just been to the dentist, (haven't been for too long) he told me I had considerable bone loss in my teeth. After reading your article I believe it has more to do with my adrenal fatigue, not absorbing minerals as I have been low in magnesium and calcium. Would love to read any other advice on repairing bone loss in my jaw, I am a healthy eater, I have only made some other changes 2 months ago with the help of a health coach. I have stopped drinking coffee, alcohol and dairy, will definitely add these other supplements more regularly.

I'm desperate for help! Dentists want to remove all teeth. I have severe jaw bone loss.
Bottom teeth have a partial that is connected to a molar on the left which anchors that side of the partial. (much decay) There are 4 incisers in the middle O.K. then next to them another tooth badly decayed holding the right side of the partial.No teeth beyond the partial on both side of the bottom. I'm not a candidate for dentures because of the bone loss. The upper teeth house a partial which will need attention sometime in the future. I will not give up at this point on faithfully using the supplements and elp to build new bone. However, is it possible to work out a routine zeroing in on what time each supplement should be taken? Unfortunately I can't be a candidate for implants because of the lack of bone support. I am very visible appearance wise in what my life require. Speaking and being a vocalist I am very strict on personal discipline and am willing to do what is reasonable to restore my jaw bones. Please and thankyou !

Hi! I have recently been told I am losing bone around my teeth I floss I brush I have a bad gap n tooth where a dentist put crown its bad where I am going now they are going to fix it!! I exercise I eat pretty healthy. This has happened over a short period of time I do have osteopenia I am 62! I drink milk almond and plain yogurt kefir milk try eat veggies!! Cottage cheese I love! I use to do a lot impact jumping I have slowed down on that I still stair master treadmill weight lift usually heavy di I need lift lighter? Been taking calcium for years I was taking caltrate I switched to citric all which one is better I do mag was doing 1on the am and pm now just doing pm because I think made me have diarhea not sure fixing to go fir colonoscopy soon! Anything else I can do I do drink a little!

will this method work in severe cases? I was told by a dentist that I have no bone left holing my teeth in.
